Located in Sunset Beach, NC, architect Dan Maples knew that the natural wetlands surrounding the 18 holes of Oyster Bay would be ideal to test golfers' accuracy and shot planning. In addition to the scenic marshes, many holes dogleg around area lakes and two different par-3's challenge golfers with island greens. Even though the course measures just under 6,700 yards, some lengthy par-4's will give golfers reason to tee it high and let it fly.
An overhead look at the picturesque Panther's Run course shows just how large a role elevation changes play in traversing its 18 holes. Architect Tim Cate heavily sculpted the fairways to challenge golfers off the tee, but even in doing this, nothing about the course feels artificial. The natural beauty of coastal North Carolina shines through, with tall natural grasses and high-reaching Carolina pines outlining many of the greens and fairways.
The Pearl East Course is situated on a 900-acre marsh preserve in Sunset Beach, NC, only a few miles across the border from Myrtle Beach. Carved out of a pine forest and running along the Calabash River, the natural scenery of the area is heavily incorporated. Golf Digest awarded the course 4 stars in large part to the consistently top-notch conditions and demanding course layout, measuring in at 6,749 yards long. Shot placement and planning are essential to keeping scores low.
The Pearl West is a fitting counterpart to the East Course, offering a traditional links-style layout that is open and often breezy, with gusts stirring the large displays of pampas grass throughout the course. Architect Don Maples planned an exciting layout, with the last four holes standing out in particular. These holes elevated on bluffs overlooking the Calabash River and the rest of the 900-acre marsh preserve. Spanning just over 7,000 yards, distance and placement are equally vital to shooting low numbers on the West Course.
Golf Digest has awarded Sandpiper Bay with a prestigious 4 star rating, and playing a round on this sterling course is sure to be a rewarding experience for golfers. Situated in Sunset Beach, NC, only a few miles north of the Grand Strand, this 27-hole course has undergone a recent renovation with all greens upgraded to MiniVerde Bermuda. With three distinct courses Sand, Piper and Bay offer unique challenges. The Sand course features elevated tees, gentle doglegs and three par-3's. The Piper course offers three par-5's and some shorter par-4's, offering great scoring opportunities. The Bay course, newest of three, features heavy use of water as both a scenic
Opened in 1999, it hasn't taken long for Thistle Golf Club to become one of the most renowned Grand Strand golf courses. Golf Digest awarded Thistle a pristine 4 star rating, and the traditions dating back to golf's Scottish roots are felt throughout. Thistle Golf Club is composed of three 9-hole courses Cameron, Mackey and Stewart and is situated in a classic links-style layout. Wide open fairways are guarded in spots by large water hazards and sprawling waste areas, so as much as you're tempted to rip it off the tee, accuracy is a must among the 27 holes of Thistle Golf Club.
Make sure your shot selection and short game is on point when you take on Tiger's Eye Golf Links. Natural waste areas, tall native grasses and treacherous water hazards are just some of the pitfalls golfers will need to traverse in order to keep their scores low. Sculpted out of the heavy forests of Carolina pines prevalent along the North Carolina coast, Tiger's Eye features impressive elevation changes of more than 60 feet in some areas. Golf Digest has given Tiger's Eye a sparkling 4 _ star rating, and the course is certainly among the finest you'll find along the Grand Strand.
